Every dog, regardless of appearance, deserves love and care. However, animal shelters have noticed that dogs perceived as less attractive are often overlooked by potential adopters, necessitating additional effort to find them loving homes.
In 2015, Bjarni, a mixed-breed dog in Huntsville, Texas, faced abandonment due to his distinctive physical characteristics. Bjarni had a noticeable deformity, missing half of his nose and part of his lips, along with scars from a likely animal attack.
Additionally, his misaligned teeth posed challenges for eating and breathing. Sadly, when contacted, his previous owners showed no interest in reclaiming him.

Fortunately, Bjarni’s story caught the attention of compassionate rescuers. Anne Graber, founder of St. Francis’ Angels in Texas, welcomed Bjarni into her care, vowing to look after him until he was ready for adoption.
Despite his facial disfigurements, Graber described Bjarni as cheerful and lovable.
Determined to improve his condition, Graber sought the expertise of Jason Balara from Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists for surgical reconstruction of Bjarni’s face.

St. Francis’ Angels reached out to supporters via Facebook, successfully raising $5,100 for the procedure.
The surgery was transformative, realigning Bjarni’s nose and sinus cavities. This not only made him “very cute and very adoptable,” as Graber noted, but also greatly improved his ability to breathe and eat.
After the surgery, Bjarni emerged as a completely transformed dog.

With his new health and appearance, Bjarni’s life prospects changed for the better. He was soon adopted into a loving family, starting a new chapter filled with hope and joy.
Graber expressed happiness in being able to help Bjarni, reflecting on how different his life could have been without the timely intervention and care he received.
