Lisa recounted to The Dodo how vast the area was, describing it as a recycling plant with many potential hiding spots for the dog. Despite her initial failure, she couldn’t shake the image of the dog’s desperate eyes, so she resolved to help.

Over the next three weeks, she routinely returned, hoping to gain the dog’s trust and provide the assistance it needed.

Every day, Lisa returned to the same location to search for the elusive dog. To earn its trust, she started a routine of providing food at a consistent spot. The dog appeared healthy, hinting it had been recently looked after before being abandoned.

On her third visit, Lisa enlisted the help of a friend and set a trap. Unfortunately, the device malfunctioned, injuring the dog’s leg and making it warier of her.

“I was really upset,” she told The Dodo. “She became even more fearful and started avoiding my car.”

Unfazed by this setback, Lisa remained committed. She continued visiting two or three times every day and maintained a feeding station for the dog. Her persistence was relentless.

Around 18 days in, Lisa decided to try the trap once more, this time securing it to a tree. She explained, “Every day I placed the food bowl a little deeper into the trap.

We used chicken pastrami, placing some near the entrance and a jackpot in the back.” Finally, on the 21st day, the Pitbull ventured into the trap, and Lisa’s patience was rewarded as she finally had the dog, whom she named Xena.

Xena, although initially anxious, was a stunning animal. Lisa carefully placed her in the car and headed to the vet. An hour of gentle companionship eased Xena, who gradually began to relax.

As the days passed, Xena embraced the love and affection surrounding her, evident when she wagged her tail for the first time on the third day. Lisa happily noted, “She just blossomed each day with love and trust, gradually casting aside her fears.”

A month later, Xena caught the attention of a family in Orange County eager to adopt her.

Shelly, who became Xena’s new mom, explained to The Dodo, “We wanted her because often black Pitbulls face adoption challenges. We chose her because we knew she’d thrive with us.”
