In Missouri, Donna Lochmann, an experienced rescuer with Stray Rescue of St. Louis (SRSL), took on one of her toughest missions yet.
Along with her team, she successfully removed nineteen dogs from a single home. One particular puppy caught Donna’s attention due to her intense fear and misunderstanding of human intentions.
This young pup, later named Roaring River, was terrified of people and unfamiliar with human kindness. When Donna approached, the small dog crouched in a corner, barking fiercely in defense.

Despite the challenge, Donna was determined not to leave her behind.
“She was pretty feral. She clearly had not been handled by humans,” Donna explained, reflecting on the puppy’s fearful demeanor.
Though little was known about the dogs’ history, it was clear that they had not received proper care and struggled with trusting humans. Roaring River, in particular, exhibited the most fear among her canine companions.

Donna, along with SRSL’s shelter manager, Kiara, worked diligently to ensure the pup’s safe removal. Each time they reached out to her, Roaring River snapped and nipped at Kiara’s arm.
Eventually, as the exhausted puppy began to calm down, Donna seized the opportunity to gently pick her up.
Feeling a sense of relief, both rescuers transported the dogs to SRSL where they received thorough health evaluations and essential veterinary care. With treatment and support, these dogs could begin transitioning into a more stable environment.
Roaring River needed extra help adjusting to her new life. Unaccustomed to wearing a leash, she panicked when staff attempted to guide her. Initially, they had to carry her outside just to give her exercise and fresh air.

“We carried her out to the yard the first few times until she got more used to being on a leash and walking some,” Donna noted, acknowledging the slow progress.
Through persistent, gentle encouragement, Roaring River eventually embraced the leash. Soon enough, she was happily racing around with other dogs at the shelter.
“She runs, plays and chases the other dogs. She’s a totally different dog now,” Donna observed.

As Roaring River’s confidence blossomed, the team felt she was ready to find a permanent home that could cater to her emotional needs. Although her siblings found families quickly, Roaring River remained patient, waiting for the right match.
Her patience paid off when a family began visiting her regularly at the shelter, allowing her the time and space to become comfortable with them.
“They’re just really letting her get used to them,” Donna said, admiring the family’s patient approach.

Eventually, the day came for Roaring River to leave with her new family. They surprised her by adopting another dog, too, providing her both a family and a companionship she could share her life with.
Now, Roaring River fills her days with play, zooming around in the yard, and giving out affection she once hesitated to show.
Roaring River’s journey highlights the power of compassion and the promise of a brighter future.
