On a chilly, snowy day in Pennsylvania, Christina Eyth noticed something intriguing as she stepped outside her home: paw prints imprinted in the fresh snow. Intrigued and concerned, she decided to follow the tracks, suspecting they belonged to a lost dog.

“The paw prints led up to my door, almost as if the animal was seeking help,” Christina recalled. Her curiosity guided her footsteps to her basement door, where she discovered a shivering animal, looking cold and distressed.

Uncertain of its species due to its appearance, Christina focused on providing immediate assistance. She coaxed the animal into the warmth of her basement, offering it food and water. The creature’s poor condition, particularly its mange, made identification difficult.

“I wasn’t sure what he was, but he never showed any aggression. I just knew he needed help,” Christina explained. Taking action, she shared details of the mysterious animal on a local message board. Her post soon caught the attention of a volunteer from Tj’s Rescue Hideaway.

Although the rescue group wasn’t sure of the animal’s identity, they knew it needed urgent care. Maria, the organizer, along with her team, safely captured the animal and transported it to Wildlife Works-Mount Pleasant for care and identification tests.

The test results were anticipated to take several weeks. Meanwhile, the animal received treatment for its severe mange and malnutrition. Despite the staff’s gentle efforts, the frightened creature remained wary.

In a surprising turn of events, only after a few days at the facility, the elusive animal managed to escape, vanishing into the wild. Eventually, the test results confirmed that it was indeed a coyote, now back in its natural habitat, where it belonged.

Reflecting on the experience, Christina felt no regrets. “Regardless of the test results, I would have done the same to help him,” she concluded, content in knowing she had done her best to assist an animal in need.
