Foster caregiver Demi made a remarkable rescue at a city dump site yesterday, as shared by Rescue Paws Curaçao (RPC). Demi managed to save two dogs from desperate circumstances, an effort that is now being fully supported by the animal rescue organization.
Describing her day, Demi recounted, “My morning began like usual, getting up and preparing for work. On my commute, I pass a well-known area where dogs are frequently abandoned, both alive and deceased. It’s the same area where I found my own pet and recently discovered two puppies, Milli and Mia. I often provide food for the stray dogs there, keeping an eye out for their well-being.”
Upon approaching the usual spot, Demi noticed something out of place. “I stopped my car and got out to see two very skinny dogs surrounded by a pile of bones. These dogs seemed to have been dumped recently, as I didn’t recognize them from my visit the evening before,” she said.
One of the dogs appeared to be trying to aid the other. “I saw one dog attempting to bring food to its companion, like it was trying to help a friend,” Demi mentioned. One of these dogs was so weak it couldn’t move and it had a chain around its neck, but Demi managed to remove it. After offering them food and water, which they thankfully accepted, Demi left for work.
Despite being at her job, Demi couldn’t shake the thought of the dogs’ plight, sharing photos and her worries with colleagues. She was relieved when, just a few hours later, her workplace allowed her to go back and get them.
Demi rushed to the dump site, still in her work clothes, fearing for the worst. Fortunately, the dogs were still there, and she swiftly took them to a veterinarian. Confronted with potential bad news, she asked the vet for a straightforward assessment. The vet determined that the dogs were severely malnourished and likely suffering from a carpathian disease, but assured Demi that they were treatable.
With initial medical treatments underway, Demi was instructed to return for additional shots. The dogs couldn’t handle oral medication due to their condition, but they could be fed small portions of chicken and rice multiple times a day. Despite their frail state—they each weighed only nine pounds, comparable to a much younger foster puppy—the dogs were eating and drinking a bit.
Now safe at the Rescue Paws Curaçao shelter, separate from other dogs to ensure their focus on recovery, these two pups are receiving all necessary care. “The team is dedicated to doing everything possible to help them survive and thrive,” Demi concluded, hopeful for their future.
