A small Chihuahua named Niq faced a life-threatening situation when he was attacked by a group of animals in Southern California, forcing him to hide under a car in fear. His future looked bleak, but the kindness of strangers and a dedicated dog rescue changed everything for him.

Witnesses to the attack quickly reached out to Logan’s Legacy Dog Rescue for help. Suzette Hall, the founder, wasted no time in coming to Niq’s aid. When she found him, the tiny dog was in desperate need of medical attention due to a severe wound. Suzette recalled to The Dodo, “He had a pretty bad wound. He had to have emergency surgery.”

Rushing Niq to Camino Pet Hospital, the medical team there promptly attended to his critical injuries. Although the surgery to repair his wounds was successful, Niq’s challenges were far from over. Soon after, he became very ill, and tests revealed that he had contracted parvo, a highly contagious virus in dogs. Despite this setback, Niq’s determined spirit and the care of his medical team meant his chances of recovery aligned with research by petMD, suggesting treated dogs have a survival rate between 75% and 80%.

Amidst these trials, Niq’s bravery shone through. His veterinary team, especially one vet tech, became incredibly invested in his recovery. “She would stay at the rescue after working hours, keeping Niq company and having playdates filled with never-ending fun,” Suzette shared, adding that the vet tech had developed a close bond with him.

Over time, her affection for Niq deepened, leading her to ask Suzette if she could take him home for the weekend, hoping to provide him with an even more nurturing environment. Suzette agreed, recognizing the special connection they shared.

The weekend turned into a turning point for Niq’s life. By Monday, the vet tech decided she couldn’t part with him and asked Suzette if she could adopt him permanently. “She said, ‘I have to have him. Can I please adopt him?’” Suzette recalled of the life-changing moment.
