In a poignant moment deep within a Florida forest, a young pit bull named Hank was found in heartbreaking conditions. At just eight months old, Hank had been left alone and abandoned, sitting still on his dog bed, resembling a “living statue.”
This narrative of survival and hope showcases Hank’s journey from despair to a new beginning, made possible by the kindness of strangers.

Hank’s ordeal began when he was deserted in the woods with only an open bag of dog food he couldn’t access and a few toys. He was severely undernourished, apathetic, and appeared emotionally shattered.
Remarkably, Hank stayed motionless, which puzzled those who later found him. A compassionate passerby encountered the forlorn dog and, struck by his plight, promptly reached out to a local animal shelter for help, rather than attempting to move him.

An animal rescue team led by Rosa Fond from Humans and Animals United responded swiftly to Hank’s dire situation. They approached with care, prepared for potentially aggressive behavior from a dog merely trying to survive. Yet, what they found was a grateful and loving creature, who immediately showed affection towards his rescuers.
Rosa Fond shared with The Dodo, “He was nothing but love from the moment they got him. Everybody says that he’s the sweetest dog.”

Upon veterinary examination, the cause of Hank’s stillness was identified: a broken leg, likely fractured over two weeks before his abandonment. This injury caused him great pain, making any movement unbearable, yet thankfully, there were no other signs of abuse.
Recognizing the immediate need for medical treatment, Fond committed to financing Hank’s leg surgery. However, the procedure had to wait until Hank regained his strength with proper nourishment.

While at the shelter, Hank received abundant love and care, warming the hearts of all who met him. His gentle demeanor transformed his tragic beginning into a tale of hope and recovery. Once he was stable, Hank was moved to a foster home to continue his healing in a nurturing setting.
Though there was significant interest in adopting Hank, Fond emphasized the importance of his complete recovery before he moves to a permanent home.

Hank is currently on a long road to recovery, yet he is enveloped by love, a stark contrast to his past experiences of neglect. His story highlights the invaluable efforts of animal rescuers and shelters who work tirelessly to offer animals like Hank a chance at a better life.
With reassurance, Fond adds that Hank is safe now, saying, “He’ll never, ever be hurt again.”

Update: In an inspiring turn of events, Hank was adopted by a loving family in April 2024.
