Animal rescuer Suzette Hall, who operates Logan’s Legacy dog rescue, learned about the dog’s struggles to find shelter in the neighborhood. Coincidentally, Suzette was facing her own challenges, having been displaced by the severe flooding in Southern California.

“I felt lost that day, like I didn’t have a place to go,” Suzette told The Dodo, recounting her emotional connection to the abandoned dog.

The neighbors had seen the dog wandering the area for several days and feared she had been left behind in the storm. The dog would scratch at doors, hoping to be let inside, and when ignored, she would sit shivering on doorsteps, Suzette shared with The Dodo.

Suzette first tried to determine if the dog had a home by posting about her online, but no one came forward. When she tracked down the pup, she found that the dog was extremely wary, keeping her distance.

Hoping to gain the dog’s trust, Suzette initially tried leaving food for her. However, the frightened dog was too scared to take the bait. Undeterred, Suzette opted for a gentler approach and simply began talking to her.

“She was too afraid to enter the trap, so I sat with her and spoke gently,” said Suzette. “I shared that I understood, telling her, ‘I’m without a home right now too.’”

This compassionate approach worked wonders. The dog gradually calmed, allowing Suzette to pet her. Once the initial trust was established, Suzette safely transported her to her truck, where the exhausted dog immediately fell asleep.

Suzette took the dog to a vet for much-needed medical attention. The dog’s matted fur required grooming to improve her condition. After a grooming session, she looked transformed and ready for the next chapter of her life.

Now called Nikki, the dog has moved into a foster home while she awaits adoption. “Everyone falls in love with her right away,” Suzette remarked to The Dodo. “She’s gentle and doesn’t even bark!”

While Nikki remains with her foster family, Suzette and her team are ensuring she receives all the affection and care she needs until she finds her forever home.
