A year ago in Ontario, Canada, a devastating discovery was made in a vacant lot near a tire store. A dog had been left alone, cruelly bound with electrical tape that covered her paws and muzzle. She was in dire condition, struggling for breath and weak from extensive pain, seemingly with only a few hours left to live. However, luck was on her side as she was found just in time. (HV)

The rescue efforts were led by the Windsor/Essex County Humane Society, who responded immediately to save the dog, later named Justice. Her condition was critical; she required urgent medical intervention to survive. The team worked tirelessly to stabilize her, but the circumstances of her abandonment revealed a shocking story.

It emerged that Justice’s former owner, whose granddaughter was allergic to pets, opted to euthanize the 7-year-old dog because she was no longer desired. Rather than finding her a new home, the owner handed Justice over to a friend, Michael Hill, along with $60 for the supposed cost of euthanasia.

This heartless act stirred outrage within the community and prompted swift legal consequences. By February, Michael Hill received a two-year prison sentence for his actions. He also faced three years of probation and was banned from owning or being near animals for 25 years. Ontario, known for its stringent animal cruelty laws, delivered a punishment widely regarded as appropriate and necessary.

Justice’s initial visit to the vet revealed the extent of her ordeal. She could barely breathe, and walking proved to be a challenge. A deep, untreated scar on her muzzle bore testament to the suffering she endured from the tape. Over the subsequent months, Justice received treatment and slowly regained her strength.

By June 2024, Justice had embarked on a new chapter, adopted by a caring family providing the love and support she had long been denied. Despite her traumatic past, she found happiness in her new home, surrounded by warmth and safety.

To recognize her journey and raise awareness about animal cruelty, the Windsor/Essex County Humane Society initiated a fundraising campaign, selling plush toy dogs resembling Justice. Each toy featured a white scar on the face, symbolizing the ordeal she endured. Priced at $30, the proceeds supported the rescue and rehabilitation of abused animals.
