Bella lives with a rare condition known as dimelia, which startled the shelter staff when they discovered it. Unlike common cases of dogs losing limbs from accidents or genetic issues, Bella’s situation is significantly different—she was born with five legs.

After conducting thorough examinations, complete with X-rays, the shelter staff confirmed Bella’s condition.

In a social media post, the Wisconsin Humane Society detailed the rarity and complexity of Bella’s condition: “This 6-month-old puppy has dimelia, a very rare congenital anomaly marked by bone duplication.

Essentially, this means an additional leg has developed inside her right hind leg.” They further described the X-ray findings, noting Bella’s extra femur, dual tibias and fibulas, and an unusual count of nine toes on one hind paw, making her an extraordinary case.

Despite the novelty of her condition, Bella remains happily unaware, living life with playful enthusiasm. Fortunately, her mobility isn’t impacted by dimelia, allowing her to enjoy her daily activities just like any other puppy.

Experts say treatment is unnecessary unless the condition causes discomfort, at which point amputation might be considered.

At the shelter’s Kenosha Campus, everyone is optimistic that the right family will welcome Bella. However, potential adopters must be ready for the unique challenges that come with adopting a dog like Bella.

While her current state is stable, future health issues such as joint pain or mobility difficulties might emerge, necessitating a special kind of care and commitment.

The decision to adopt Bella should not be taken lightly. While many are eager to help dogs with special needs, it requires understanding and accepting a long-term commitment to her well-being.
