Every dog deserves a caring home and the love that makes them feel cherished. True contentment for dogs comes only when they feel safe and important in their family’s life.
Unfortunately, many dogs face neglect, even from those they should be able to trust. Such was the case for Morty, a sweet-spirited Pit Bull in North Carolina.
Instead of the warmth of a home, he was left tethered outside, yearning for the affection he was denied.
Confined to his small kennel, Morty felt forgotten and isolated. Little did he know, his life was about to change for the better.
Morty’s rescue began when PETA intervened and facilitated his release. His journey then took him to the Virginia Beach SPCA, where the staff learned about his past hardships.
They welcomed him with the kindness he desperately needed, offering gentle strokes and comforting words. For the first time in a long while, Morty felt a sense of relief.
Around this time, Andrea and her husband embarked on a quest to find a dog to adopt.
“We wanted a Pit Bull because we had heard they were loving and loyal, and we didn’t believe the stigma,” Andrea shared with GeoBeats Animals.
Upon visiting the shelter, Morty’s expressive brown eyes immediately drew their attention. They knew right away he was the dog they had been hoping to find.
The mark on his neck was a stark reminder of the cruelty he had endured, strengthening their resolve to provide him with a safe, loving environment.
Morty needed some time to get used to his new surroundings. Initially, he would leap on furniture and chew objects as he learned to adjust to his new environment.
Andrea and her husband stayed patient, guiding him and offering reassurance. With a steady routine and plenty of love, Morty gradually grew more comfortable. A few months in, he was flourishing and showing off his cheerful nature.
Although Morty has bonded with both Andrea and her husband, he shares an especially strong connection with her husband.
Each day, he eagerly waits for his return from work, rushing joyfully to greet him with boundless excitement.
Morty loves meeting new people and approaches them with a wagging tail. Admirers often comment on his enormous, floppy ears, which Andrea affectionately declares as his most endearing trait.
There remains one thing that unsettles him: Morty fears water, likely a lingering fear from being left outside during storms in his former life.
Morty has an intuitive sense of his family’s emotions. Whenever they feel upset, he instinctively offers comfort.
“There are times when I feel down about the discrimination we face with his breed, and one day I was really upset and just sobbing. Morty came right up to me, sensing my distress, making it all better,” Andrea recalled.
She feels profoundly thankful that Morty, despite his past, has chosen to trust and love them.
“He doesn’t know us, but he trusts us, and he has shown us nothing but love. I’m so grateful he felt safe enough to give us this chance,” Andrea expressed.
Morty now enjoys the life he always yearned for. His family surrounds him with love, cuddles, and plenty of adventures. His pictures, full of endless joy, frequently light up his Instagram page.
