A year ago in Ontario, Canada, a heart-wrenching situation highlighted both acts of cruelty and kindness. A distressed dog was found abandoned next to a tire store, her paws and snout cruelly bound with electrical tape.

In intense pain and struggling to breathe, her future looked bleak. However, fortune smiled upon her as she was discovered just in time.

The Windsor/Essex County Humane Society rushed to the scene to aid the dog, later named Justice. Her condition was critical, necessitating immediate medical intervention to save her.

The team worked tirelessly to stabilize her, and the story of her abandonment soon came to light.

Justice’s former owner had decided to put her down as his granddaughter was allergic to pets and Justice was no longer wanted.

The owner gave his friend, Michael Hill, $60 for her euthanasia. Shockingly, Hill instead wrapped Justice in electrical tape and abandoned her, hoping the dog would die.

The local community was outraged by this act of cruelty, prompting swift legal response.

In February, Michael Hill was sentenced to two years in prison. Additionally, he received three years of probation and a 25-year ban from owning or being near animals.

Ontario, known for its stringent animal cruelty laws, deemed this punishment fitting and necessary.

When Justice was taken to the vet, it was a dire situation. She was barely able to breathe or walk, with a deep scar on her muzzle as a permanent reminder of her suffering.

Over several months, Justice underwent treatment and rehabilitation, slowly regaining her vitality.

By June 2023, Justice’s story took a positive turn. She was adopted by a loving family, offering her the comfort and care she had been missing. Despite the darkness of her past, Justice found peace and happiness in her new, loving environment.

In tribute to her journey, the Windsor/Essex County Humane Society started a unique fundraising campaign. They designed plush toy dogs patterned after Justice, complete with a white scar on the face to symbolize her trials.

Selling for $30, all proceeds are directed towards rescuing and rehabilitating abused animals.

Justice’s journey serves as a powerful reminder of the cruelty that animals can face, but also of the strength and resilience that can lead to redemption.
