In Santa Monica last week, a building caught fire, prompting a swift response from local firefighters. Among the chaos, a dog named Nalu was found unconscious inside, struggling to breathe.
It was firefighter Andrew Klein who discovered the puppy amidst the smoke and heat. Recalling the moment to KABC, Klein said, “I found him in the heat and smoke. He was already gone.”
Determined to save Nalu, Klein performed “mouth-to-snout” CPR, followed by placing the puppy in an oxygen mask.
After nearly 20 tense minutes, Nalu started breathing independently again, slowly regaining consciousness. Once revived, neighbors kindly transported him to a nearby animal hospital for further care.
Nalu, a mix of Bichon Frise and Shih Tzu breeds, had been left behind when his owner, Crystal Lamirande, returned to find her apartment ablaze.
While Lamirande lost her possessions in the fire, she has since formed a meaningful connection with her local fire department, as reported by KABC.
Klein shared with KTLA his relief and pride in how Nalu’s rescue turned out. “That was pretty amazing,” he expressed.
He noted that not all animal rescue missions have successful outcomes, making this particular incident a triumph for both the team and the department.
Thanks to the firefighters’ rapid response, the fire was extinguished in just ten minutes, with no injuries reported. This story highlights the dedication and courage of those who work tirelessly to save lives, both human and animal, in emergencies.
