On the chilly morning of February 25th, Nate Ohlman’s routine mail route in Missouri took an unexpected turn. He spotted an elderly dog struggling to stay warm in a ditch at the end of a deserted road.
The sight of the forlorn animal moved Ohlman deeply, and he felt compelled to help.
Approaching cautiously, Ohlman soon realized that the dog, suffering from impaired hearing and vision, was fragile and in need.

“I made some noises to get his attention, and once he saw me, he ran toward my mail truck,” Ohlman recounted to The Dodo. The dog, later named Sloan, was cold, hungry, and lonely.
Determined to get Sloan the care he needed, Ohlman swiftly transported him to the nearest animal hospital. He left his contact details with the staff to stay informed about Sloan’s condition, hoping for his recovery.
Despite continuing his work, Ohlman’s thoughts lingered on the dog and the circumstances leading to its abandonment.

Haunted by the cruelty Sloan had faced, Ohlman reflected, “It broke my heart to think he had no one. It felt like fate led me to find him.”
Meanwhile, KC Pet Project took Sloan in the day after his rescue. His condition was dire—underweight, covered in sores, and unable to stand for long periods.
Tori Fugate, KC Pet Project’s chief communications officer, described Sloan’s condition as receiving the lowest possible health score.

However, with medication and attentive care, Sloan began to improve. As he recuperated, the once-timid dog revealed a playful side, eagerly seeking human affection.
Flourishing in his foster home, Sloan’s health improved, and he grew into a charming, sociable companion. When the time came to find Sloan a permanent home, there was no question about where he should go.

The reunion between Ohlman and Sloan was heartwarming, with Sloan remembering and showering his savior with affection. Now, Sloan enjoys his new home, surrounded by love and security.
Ohlman, reflecting on Sloan’s journey, shared, “Sloan, once part of a family, was wrongfully abandoned, but I simply responded with kindness.”
