The staff at the Amelia County Animal Shelter in Virginia are no strangers to receiving distressing calls. Having rescued numerous dogs across the county, they’ve witnessed a wide range of situations involving canines in need.
However, a recent call from a local dollar store patrons was unlike any they’d seen before. It involved a mother dog, captured in a photograph peering inside the store, displaying a scene they’d never encountered.
Earlier that day in Jetersville, shoppers at Dollar General noticed an unexpected sight. A pit bull sat silently just outside the store’s entrance, seemingly pleading for attention through the door.
Despite her rugged appearance, marked by scratches, the dog had a gentle and longing expression in her eyes. The compassionate individuals at the store were determined to assist her.
These kind individuals provided the dog with food and water and promptly contacted the local animal control office. When officers arrived to help the dog, who was later named Izzy, they quickly saw that she was a nursing mother. A brief search nearby uncovered her adorable litter of puppies, who were hungry and in need of refuge.
The rescue team gathered the vulnerable family and took them to Amelia County Animal Shelter, where Izzy and her puppies were welcomed warmly and scheduled for a veterinary check-up the next day.
“Mom and the babies went to the vet today and got checked out, pedicures, and some meds to get all of them right on track,” the shelter shared on Facebook, adding that “everyone is doing good and eating well.”
Izzy and her litter instantly charmed the shelter staff. Between watching the pups eagerly consume their meals and cuddling with Izzy, the team quickly grew fond of them.
“Mama, aka Izzy, is such a love bug,” they expressed on Facebook.
To aid Izzy’s recovery from her recent ordeals, the staff decided to provide her with occasional breaks from her maternal duties. As one staff member kept an eye on the puppies, another spent quality one-on-one time with Izzy, allowing her gentle nature to shine.
“Izzy is enjoying some time away from the babies and fresh air,” the shelter shared in an update. “She is so gentle taking treats.”
Currently, Izzy and her puppies remain at the shelter, working on regaining their strength. Once they’re healthy enough, they will be ready for adoption. Until then, they’re basking in the love and care provided by their friends at the shelter. With each affectionate moment, the memory of their time outside the dollar store fades further into the past.
