Stewart’s Journey: From Abandoned and Afraid to Resilient and Hopeful

Published on

Recently, animal control authorities discovered a small, frightened animal in a forest, tied to a tree with a heavy leather strap attached to a chain.

The poor creature, named Stewart by his rescuers, was found in a dire state, emaciated and clearly abandoned without food or water, left to die.

Courtney Bellew, Director of Animal Rescue and Rehabilitation at SNARR, expressed, “When we discovered him, we were confident his prior existence must have been terribly painful.”

When Stewart was brought to a shelter, it was clear that he had endured severe trauma, as he spent his initial days there cowering in a corner, too afraid to interact with anyone.

A shelter volunteer shared, “I didn’t want anybody to touch him. He was hidden in a corner. He was definitely scared.”

Any attempt by people to approach him was met with growls and a retreat into himself, signaling the abuse he likely experienced in the past. His fear was so profound that removing the leather collar was initially impossible.

Rebecca Rood, another volunteer, noted, “Stewart was so agitated by our presence that we thought we’d let him relax.” Despite the volunteers’ best efforts to give him space and time, Stewart showed little improvement.

He barely ate and a visit to the vet was a challenge. Faced with these difficulties, Courtney decided sedation was necessary to conduct a thorough medical examination.

The veterinarian administered treatment to help Stewart regain his strength, and during the sedation, Courtney was able to remove the burdensome collar.

This gesture marked a turning point for Stewart; he awoke without the weight of his past and began to show signs of curiosity and engagement with those around him.

“That belt around his neck was a weight from his history. When we pulled it off he began to open up and even wag his tail,” Courtney recalled, capturing the transformation.

Stewart, with the uninhibited support of his rescuers, started on the road to mental and physical healing.
